2026 already has more than its fair share of tragic deaths in the greater Hollywood landscape, with former Grey’s Anatomy and Charmed star Eric Dane‘s passing hitting audiences hard. After a prolonged battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Dane passed away on Feb. 19 at only 53 years old, leaving behind a long legacy of work on the big and small screen. Tributes from fans and co-stars alike have been pouring in online since Dane’s passing was first announced, bringing back some of their favorite memories of his performances and working alongside him.
About a week and a half after Dane’s death, People has officially confirmed the late actor’s cause of death. According to the death certificate from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, Dane died from respiratory failure. Additionally, ALS was also listed as an underlying cause of death. Dane revealed that he was fighting his battle with ALS in April 2025, passing away less than a year after sharing that news with the world.
Dane became one of the public faces in the battle against ALS during the last year of his life, providing updates on his progress and inspiring people going through the same struggle. Upon his passing in February, Dane’s family shared a public statement, paying tribute to the late star and his health journey:
“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world. Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.
In the days and weeks since Dane’s passing, his co-stars have shed light on their experiences with the actor, giving fans nothing but positive insight into their work with him. Grey’s star Patrick Dempsey referred to Dane as “the funniest man” and “such a joy to work with,” remembering how easy it was to build chemistry and work together. Co-star Kim Raver took it a step further by describing Dane as “a light” on set who always had a “twinkle in his eyes.”
Dane’s work on screen is also not quite finished, as he was able to return for Euphoria Season 3 and film his material, once again playing the role of Cal Jacobs. While his fate in the show is still a mystery after his death, creator Sam Levinson was honored to work with him and paid tribute to his family in light of his passing. Dane previously teased that Cal would find a “moment of truth” and potential “redemption” this season, which is sure to bring an emotional end to his story.
