During the interrogation scene in Ben Franklin, Rainn Wilson actually improvised several of Dwight’s questions while trying to expose the Ben Franklin impersonator.
What makes the moment even better is that Andy Daly, who played the impersonator, somehow knew the perfect answers.
One question in particular wasn’t in the script at all. Rainn suddenly asked, “Are you nearsighted or farsighted?” — completely on the spot. Luckily for Daly, he had done some quick research beforehand and remembered that Benjamin Franklin invented bifocals because he struggled with both distance and reading vision.
So without missing a beat, Daly answered:
“Both. That’s why I invented the bifocal.”
The response surprised everyone on set. Even Mindy Kaling asked if the two actors had planned it beforehand. They hadn’t. It was a completely spontaneous moment that just happened to line up perfectly — one of those rare improv exchanges so good it had to stay in the final episode.
