Prime Video’s best sci-fi action series will soon return for a second season, and as the anticipation builds among the fan base, many viewers are diving back into the show’s debut season. Prime Video is home to some incredible sci-fi shows, including The Expanse, The Man in the High Castle, Tales from the Loop, and the criminally underrated Outer Range. But, in 2024, Prime Video released arguably its best sci-fi show that adapted one of the most bonkers action video game franchises of all time. We’re, of course, talking about Fallout, and its spurs are jingle-jangling back up the streaming chart.

Before Season 2 takes audiences to New Vegas, Fallout fans are diving back into the show’s first season, set in the Wasteland of California. Season 1 of Fallout is currently the 10th most popular series on Prime Video this week, with the new season of Hazbin Hotel in the top spot, and Harlan Coben’s Lazarus in second.

Fallout is based on the video game series of the same name by Black Isle Studios and Bethesda Studios. Unlike most video game adaptations, which directly transcribe the story into live-action, Fallout took a different approach. The series told a new story set within the world of the video games. Thanks to its strict adherence to the pre-established events in the games, Fallout was a major hit with gamers, while also being a wildly entertaining sci-fi action series in its own right. The official synopsis reads:

“Fallout is the story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there’s almost nothing left to have. Two-hundred years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind — and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird, and highly violent universe waiting for them.”

To call Fallout Season 1 a success would be an understatement. As well as walking the narrow tightrope that is appeasing the fans of the video games, Fallout lured in enough casual viewers to smash Prime Video streaming records. Season 1 earned 65 million viewers in its first two weeks on streaming, while also being a critical hit, holding a critics’ and user ratings of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. “The show that ‘has no business’ being as good as it is. Truly fantastic,” read one user’s review on Rotten Tomatoes.

It’s no surprise, then, that Prime Video renewed the series for a second season. Fallout Season 2 was announced a few short weeks after Season 1 dropped. The Season 1 finale promised a lot for the second season, with the big reveal being that the show would be heading to New Vegas. Set photos from Season 2 teased some fan favorite locations from Fallout: New Vegas (which is commonly considered to be the best game in the franchise). But the first teaser for the second season brought the New Vegas strip to life, and fans can’t wait. Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins, and Aaron Moten are all returning for the second season. Season 2 of Fallout drops on Prime Video on December 17.
