Summary

  • T-Mobile will offer subscribers of over five years a free line to keep them happy amidst industry struggles.
  • Eligibility includes having an account open for at least 5 years and meeting specific criteria.
  • The mostly free line has a one-time $10 connection charge and is only for bring-your-own-device setups.

When you enjoy using a company’s product for a long time, it gets frustrating when new customers get all the sweetest benefits. When loyal customers don’t get any love, they consider jumping ship for greener pastures. In the wake of Verizon bleeding almost 300,000 subscribers in the first quarter of 2025, T-Mobile is trying to keep longtime users happy by giving away free stuff to those who have been around for five years or more.

Well, one thing, at least: a free line. And, of course, there’s a catch. Well, four catches, to be exact. But if you don’t already receive one of a few specific (and slightly uncommon) discounts and haven’t canceled any lines recently, you could soon receive a gift from the Un-carrier (Source: The Mobile Report).

Who is eligible for T-Mobile’s latest free line?

Despite the conditions, it may well include you

T-Mobile T-Life app home

None of the Go5G plans — which T-Mobile is moving away from — are eligible.

As with its most recent free line offer, T-Mobile isn’t just handing out the perk to anybody with an account opened before May 2020. The restrictions aren’t many, and they do make sense:

  • Your account must be at least 5 years old
  • You can’t already have a free line
  • Accounts with the Insider discount, Hometown Discount, or Work Perks aren’t eligible
  • You must not have canceled a line in the last 90 days

Those are all pretty reasonable — T-Mobile doesn’t want to dish out countless free lines that won’t be used, after all. The only odd one is the exclusionary discounts. Each of those perks offers from 15% to 20% off a specified line or service throughout the life of the account, which correlates somewhat to the price of an individual line once you’ve opened several. In other words, accounts with those perks essentially already receive a line at close to no charge.

Interestingly, the leak indicates that business accounts and T-Mobile employee accounts will be eligible for the giveaway. As a final stipulation, though, be aware that it’s an exclusively bring-your-own-device line, so it won’t ever be able to work with devices financed through the carrier.

Is the free line actually free?

Technically, no, but it requires only a one-time $10 Device Connection Charge. If you were even remotely considering the idea of adding a voice line to your T-Mobile plan instead of running to a new carrier, the offer could at least hold you over.

You can actually call customer service (at 611 from a T-Mobile phone) right now to find out if you’ll get the free line. Or you can wait a few days. On May 8, text messages to eligible account holders are expected to begin, after which you can order via the web interface or T-Life app.
