Spoiler Warning: This article contains spoilers for Stranger Things Season 5.Like any significant series finale, the last episode of Stranger Things brings up some big questions, but thankfully, the Duffer Brothers have answered them. The Stranger Things Season 5 finale streamed on Dec. 31st, 2025, finishing off 2025 with a heartwarming, scary, and ultimately gratifying two-hour episode. Some enjoyed the finale on the big screen at a local movie theater, and others had fun watching the Netflix series from the comfort of their home. No matter how viewers watched, there’s no doubt that this was a finale to remember.

Now that we’ve had a few days to think about the Stranger Things Season 5 ending, we all have certain questions that we want answered. Matt and Ross Duffer have been busy giving several compelling interviews, and they’ve spilled some behind-the-scenes secrets and shared the reason why they made certain decisions.

What Is the ‘Stranger Things’ Spin-off About?

After watching how it all wraps up, there’s one significant question: what story is the live-action spin-off going to tell? Over the past few years, fans have come up with various Stranger Things spin-off ideas. Now, there’s some information, although we’re still not sure when we’ll see this new series.

In a recent interview with Variety, the Duffer Brothers explained that the spin-off is somewhat tied to the moment in the finale when Henry Creel is holding a red rock that was in a briefcase in the cave he’s so terrified of. They also told Entertainment Weekly the spin-off is “its own mythology.” Of course, the Duffers probably don’t want to say anything else, so it’ll likely be a while before we get more details. But at least we have an idea of what’s coming, and it sounds like the spin-off will have the same mysterious vibe as the original show.

Was Henry/Vecna Going To Become “Good” in the ‘Stranger Things’ Finale?

Henry Creel/Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) is one of the most complex characters on the Netflix series, and if you saw the play Stranger Things: The First Shadow, you learned more about Henry’s origins. When watching the finale, many viewers wondered if Henry would become a “good” character. After all, fans see glimpses of his humanity, and when facing Holly Wheeler (Nell Fisher) and the other children, he even looks like a scared little kid.

However, that would ultimately be unsatisfying given Vecna’s evil nature (and we wouldn’t have gotten that awesome Joyce Byers scene). Ross told Deadline that he and Matt thought about “a redemption moment” featuring Henry. However, he explained that “Henry has gone too far now.” After five seasons of fear, battles, and pain, it would have definitely been anticlimactic if Henry were suddenly kind-hearted. Plus, that Vecna/Joyce moment was unforgettable.

Where Is Eleven in Her Final ‘Stranger Things’ Scene?

In the same EW interview, Matt and Ross Duffer answer another big question: where does the last scene featuring Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) take place? When Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard) and his friends have finished playing Dungeons & Dragons, and he envisions everyone’s futures, he talks about wanting to think that Eleven is peacefully enjoying her time in a special place that is nowhere near Hawkins. This scene is just one reason why the Stranger Things Season 5 finale is emotional.

Matt said they shot the scene in Iceland and noted that the rainbow was authentic, not CGI. He continued that he and his brother stayed in Iceland for about one day, and Millie Bobby Brown shot this sweet moment after she was done starring in Enola Holmes 3, which was filmed in London. If fans agree that Eleven is really there, they can say she finally gets to see the world, which she might have never thought was possible.

Is Eleven Dead or Alive in the ‘Stranger Things’ Finale?

As soon as Eleven says goodbye to Mike and walks into the Upside Down, we all want to know: is Eleven dead, or is she off in a faraway land, as Mike tells his friends? According to the Duffer Brothers, her fate is mysterious. And, most importantly, they explained to EW that it was always going to be the case. Matt Duffer also told Deadline that the show was originally going to be a limited series, and they decided on the conclusion of Eleven’s arc back then. He said they knew, “El has to sacrifice herself in some way.”

Millie Bobby Brown does a great job as Eleven throughout all five seasons of Stranger Things. And when she tells Mike she loves him and that she appreciates the meaningful friendships she developed in Hawkins, it’s Brown’s best performance. Since Eleven has suffered so much, it’s tough to think she never made it out of the Upside Down.

Could Eleven Ever Talk to Mike Again After the ‘Stranger Things’ Finale?

So, if she’s alive, can Eleven talk to Mike, and will they meet again in the future? Although that’s a lovely idea, it’s unrealistic, and the Duffer Brothers seem to have shot that idea down. Matt Duffer told Variety, “Eleven does not communicate with Mike in any way.” Ross added that it would be too dangerous for Eleven to return to her friends and family.

This probably wasn’t the answer that many fans wanted to hear. It’s terrible to imagine Eleven and Mike never seeing each other again. They’ve gone through so much together, and they clearly have real feelings for one another. But, at the same time, the Stranger Things ending proves that maturing and growing up means accepting harsh truths. Just because two people love each other, it doesn’t mean they can stay together. Of course, in most cases, high school sweethearts break up when they go away to college, not because one commits a shocking sacrifice.

Noah Schnapp as Will Byers in Stranger Things Season 5 Netflix

Before the Stranger Things Season 5 finale streamed on Netflix, some fans signed a Change.org petition asking for “unseen footage.” Along with wondering about the heartbreaking end of Eleven’s character arc (and maybe crying while watching Mike’s monologue), fans are likely curious about whether footage was cut.

Ross told Variety, “I don’t think there’s a single cut scene in the entire season.” Unlike some cases where creators and showrunners exit a TV show before the series finale and, therefore, don’t get the chance to finish their story, Stranger Things was always the tale that the Duffer Brothers wanted to put out into the world. They made it clear in various interviews that they thought long and hard about each character, storyline, and element. We can definitely rest assured knowing that they made the final season that they hoped they could.

Were Major ‘Stranger Things’ Characters Going To Die?

Kali in Stranger Things Netflix

Besides Kali Prasad (Linnea Berthelsen), no main character dies in the Stranger Things series finale. Many fans were likely surprised by this. After all, how could the Party beat Vecna without any major issues? And how could such a big TV event avoid big deaths?

Chances are, most of us were curious if the Duffer Brothers originally planned for other characters to perish. Some thought it would definitely be Eleven, Will Byers (Noah Schnapp), or Steve Harrington (Joe Keery). In their interview with Deadline, Ross said they “talked through everything” but focused on the heartwarming scenes between the main characters. He explained that “the show is an adventure story. It’s a coming-of-age story.” That’s definitely a relief. Not knowing if Eleven is alright is stressful and emotional enough, and it would have been horrible to have to mourn another huge loss, too.
