In The Truman Show (1999), the man playing the piano while Truman sleeps is composer Phillip Glass. He created some of the music for the movie, including the piece he is playing.
The opening song from Truman Show is in fact the theme song from the movie "Mishima" also scored by Glass. Great soundtrack for a pretty underappreciated movie, no surprise Glass could reuse it and no one would notice.
Philip Glass is an amazing composer, I listen to him a lot when I study or when I’m reading. He scored other films too like The Hours and Koyaanisqatsi . Also, his versions of Bowie’s Heroes and Lodger are worth checking out. In my opinion for his best fully original stuff listen to Dance Nos. 1-5. That is all.
Only nominated for a three academy awards… wow. I thought he would have a few but then again the academy likes music that blows their minds and Phillip’s minimalisyic style doesn’t necessarily do that.
Fun fact: This American Life’s Ira Glass and Philip Glass are cousins! I learned during a live broadcast/performance when Ira brought him on to play something for the show. Blew my mind a little since I’ve been listening to both of them since I was a kid.
Imagine if we didn’t know if Truman had schizophrenia or if he really was in a TV show. Instant classic. I mean it is, but not as popular as other movies.
Just learnt about phillip glass after someone posted Koyannisqatsi on here recently. I really liked his music and I feel like Hans Zimmerman was strongly influenced by Glass

The piece is "Truman Sleeps"
Watched this again recently. Proper amazing film
So the composer for The Truman Show actually became the composer for The Truman Show?
Good afternoon, good evening and goodnight!
Was it ever explained why the guy was playing live and not use a recording?
Love Phillip Glass. One of the great.

Just an evening?
And today is Philip’s birthday!

I just scrolled to this post while listening to him playing on the Truman Show movie at the same time by happenstance. I can’t make this up.
Jim Carrey’s snub for Best Actor in this movie is probably the biggest snub the Oscars have ever done.

I listened to ‘1000 Airplanes on the Roof’ every day for a while.
I didn’t know but it makes sense, some of his work is so out there…so experimental. He fits the meta energy of the movie
Phillip Glass is the man. I’ve always loved the music in Candyman. The main theme still gets stuck in my head all the time.
Metamorphosis is one of my favorite albums.
My favorite philip glass piece is Music with changing parts. fell in love with it after watching Reality
Lmao I am listening to Glassworks while scrolling reddit right now
Dude Phillip glass makes amazing music, metamorphosis is stunning
He’s also the cousin of Ira Glass from This American Life.
One of the many reasons I love that movie, the music. Happy Birthday Phillip.

One of my favorite bands, Emancipator, mixed this with MGMT’s “Kids” and it’s one of my favorite mixes ever

Looks like Glass. I did not know that, thanks! Excellent movie, wonderful composer.
Oh an evening with Philip Glass.
Phillip Glass also has some pretty “out there” music. You should check it out
Adore Phillip Glass. His music moves me.
The piece is he playing?
“Truman Sleeps,” fittingly.
I knew Glass composed some stuff for the movie but never realized he had a cameo, that’s so great!
Minor plug for /r/philipglass here too
And here’s a cover of the song from the movie:

Truman Sleeps is one of the prettiest pieces of score I ever done listened to. Philip glass is a rockstar!
Not that it really matters, but it was released in 1998, not 1999.
Koy in the cock ski
Just a quick fix but the Truman show came out in 1998 not 1999
