Heat is often considered to be one of the greatest action movies of all time. Director Michael Mann led Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Val Kilmer through an intense heist thriller, where a police officer’s obsession with catching criminals tears his own life apart. Everything from the script, to the performances, to the shootouts (you can’t mention Heat without bringing up Val Kilmer’s iconic reload). Heat is also considered to be Michael Mann’s best movie. But his previous release, which starred none other than Daniel Day-Lewis, is just as action-packed and well-received, and it’s now streaming for free.
Set during the Seven Years’ War, Daniel Day-Lewis plays a half-white, half-Native American called Hawkeye, whose tribe, the Mohicans, live peacefully with the British colonists. When the daughter of a powerful British colonel is kidnapped, Hawkeye and his adoptive brother, Uncas, must survive the brutal battles of the war to find her and bring her home. Released in 1992 to immense acclaim and an Oscar win, The Last of the Mohicans is now streaming for free on Tubi.
It’s safe to say that The Last of the Mohicans was a hit when it was released. The film is often hailed as one of the greatest contemporary Westerns, alongside the likes of Unforgiven. The Last of the Mohicans holds a tremendous 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on a mix of old and newer reviews. Roger Ebert awarded Michael Mann’s historical action epic 3/4 stars, heaping praise on the performances and Mann’s direction.
‘The Last of the Mohicans’ Is Bloody, Brutal, and Realistic
Before we make the internet historians mad, it’s incredibly rare for a movie to be 100% historically accurate. Not only does that require painstaking detail, but it would often sacrifice the quality of the actual narrative. But, like how Val Kilmer, Al Pacino, and Robert De Niro received extensive weapons training for Heat, the cast of The Last of the Mohicans were also taught how to survive during the founding of the American colonies.
During the film’s theatrical release, a lot of press and promotion focused on the attention to detail within the movie. The cast underwent wilderness survival training, and the bows, arrows, and even the moccasins were made using the original techniques. When that attention to detail is placed upon a moving script with another timeless performance by Daniel Day-Lewis and some brutal action, it’s easy to see why The Last of the Mohicans is a classic.
‘The Last of the Mohicans’ Has Been Labeled as “Controversial” In Recent Years
The Last of the Mohicans has also been re-evaluated by contemporary audiences, both for its narrative and creative choices. The white savior trope, which was rife in 20th-century westerns, is obviously apparent in the movie. But, The Last of the Mohicans‘ controversy goes a step further. In recent years, Daniel Day-Lewis’s casting as a dual-heritage Native American has been the center of criticism from modern viewers.
Some audiences might not care, and others will blow it off as being “how Hollywood was back then,” but it’s an important factor to note regarding the changing dynamics and standards of movie-making.
