When Game of Thrones ended its eight-season run with its divisive finale in 2019, it was among the most watched series of all time. So, naturally, networks across the TV landscape were clamoring to find the next show that would recapture the original’s enticing blend of political intrigue, intense violence, and pitiless storytelling. Plenty of shows have been labeled “the next Game of Thrones” over the past five years, from FX’s Shogun to HBO’s own attempt to recapture the magic in the prequel series House of the Dragon. And with the release of Dune: Prophecy, another big-budget epic has entered the fray.
