NOVEMBER 4 – CROWS DELIST DUO… BUT PROMISE TORE-DRAFT
Adelaide have announced the delistings of utility Chris Burgess and on-baller Harry Schoenberg, however are committed to re-claiming them in this month’s rookie draft.
Former Sun Burgess played seven games this year in his first season at West Lakes, while Schoenberg played four during the middle part of 2024.
Schoenberg was taken with Pick No. 24 2019 Draft by Adelaide, and has played 63 games at the top level.
The Crows have picks 4, 64 and 82 in this year’s National Draft.
OCTOBER 31 – PREMIERSHIP CATS EXTEND
Patrick Dangerfield, Mitch Duncan and Rhys Stanley have signed contract extensions with Geelong.
Dangerfield, who will next year serve his third season as Cats captain, has put pet to paper on a two-year deal, tying him to the Cats until the end of 2026.
Two-time Geelong flag-winner Duncan and 210-gamer Stanley each received one-year deals.
“Patrick, Mitch and Rhys have been strong pillars of our Club both on and off the field. Their commitment, leadership and motivation to continually develop themselves and our program has been exceptional,” football boss Andrew Mackie said in a statement.
The AFL’s list lodgement period closed on October 31, with clubs able to sign delisted free agents as of Friday, November 1.
OCTOBER 31 – EAGLE STEPS AWAY; HAWK, ROO, SAINT AND GWS TRIO AXED WITH ROOKIE PROMISES
West Coast midfielder Luke Edwards has decided to step away from the game to focus on his health and wellbeing.
“Luke has made the difficult decision to step away from the AFL to concentrate on his physical and mental wellbeing,” General Manager of Football Gavin Bell said.
“The club will continue to give full support to Luke and would like to thank him for his efforts over the last four years.
“He has been a popular member of the squad in his time at the club and we wish him well for the next chapter of his life’s journey.”
Edwards played 37 senior matches after being selected with pick 52 in the 2020 national draft.
“I am stepping away from the game currently due to concussion reasons to allow me the time to return to full health,” Edwards said.
“With the support of my family and the club, I will take all steps required to prepare myself for the next steps in my life.”
Hawthorn have delisted three-time premiership player Jack Gunston but have committed to selecting him in the rookie draft next month.
The 33-year-old has played 260 games across his AFL career booting 481 goals.
He returned to Waverley Park after a one-year stint at Brisbane and has been crucial in developing Hawthorn’s young talls including young gun Calsher Dear.
Gunston has also spent time with the club’s AFLW program in a coaching capacity this season.
Hawthorn National Recruiting and List Manager Mark McKenzie said the list manoeuvre was made with the full support of Gunston.
“Ultimately this list move ensures the club is in the strongest position possible heading into the draft, which Jack was very supportive of,” McKenzie said.
“Jack’s approach to this list manoeuvre speaks to his selflessness and commitment to Hawthorn in wanting to put the club in the best position moving forward.”
GWS have also delisted a trio of players – Lachlan Keeffe, Josh Fahey and Jacob Wehr – but have committed to picking the trio up in the rookie draft.
Fahey will serve a four-match ban next year for his role in offensive skits performed at a private function on September 18.
Keefe has played 116 games at the top level, while Wehr has played 25.
St Kilda confirmed an identical move for veteran midfielder Brad Crouch, announcing he had been delisted with the promise to be re-selected in November’s rookie draft.
Elsewhere, North Melbourne has announced it has delisted defender Toby Pink — but in a ‘selfless’ move that will afford the club list flexibility, the key-position player will re-sign as a rookie.
It comes just a month after Pink signed a one-year contract extension to take his Roos commitment into 2025.
Pink is one year into his Arden Street tenure, having signed as a delisted free agent at the end of last year. He played 15 senior matches this season.
“This will give us the flexibility to bring in more young talent through the upcoming national draft,” list boss Brady Rawlings said of the move on Thursday.
“Toby has worked hard to earn a second chance in the AFL, and we are committed to re-drafting him as a rookie.
“We thank Toby for selflessly agreeing to this move to assist the club with our list strategy.”
OCTOBER 30 – SWANS DELIST DUO WITH PROMISE TO RE-ROOKIE
Sydney have temporarily delisted defensive duo Joel Hamling and Aaron Francis, but have pledged to re-draft them next month.
Francis, a former Bomber, played five games in season 2024 and was out of contract at the end of this year.
Hamling, who has previously played at both the Western Bulldogs and Fremantle, is yet to make his AFL debut at his third club and was contracted until the end of 2025.
He was a part of the Bulldogs’ premiership team in 2016, before moving to the Dockers less than a month later.
OCTOBER 30 – HAWKS SIGN FORMER BASKETBALLER, RUGBY PLAYER
Hawthorn have announced the signing of two Category B rookies, each from different sporting codes.
Jamie Uhr-Henry – a former basketballer – and Matt Hill, who comes from a rugby background, will join this year’s semi-finalists for the 2025 season.
Uhr-Henry has previously been listed at two NBL One clubs, being the Bulleen Boomers and Dandenong Rangers.
Meanwhile, 20-year-old Hill was a part of the Melbourne Storm’s Academy in addition to club’s First Nations Pathway Program in the NRL.
“While Jaime and Matt join the club as a relatively raw duo, they both possess enormous upside,” Hawthorn National Recruiting and List Manager Mark McKenzie said in a club statement.
“Standing at 209cm, Jaime clearly has some exciting physical traits, along with his professional basketball background we believe his progression will be one to watch.
“Meanwhile, at 20 years of age, Matt has shown in his young sporting career that he is a naturally gifted athlete with exciting speed, in addition to playing several years of footy as a junior, he has immense potential.
“Given time to develop, we’re confident both Jaime and Matt can make an impact in our program in the near future.”
OCTOBER 29 – FOUR MAGPIES PEN EXTENSIONS
Collingwood has announced the re-signings of four players as the AFL list lodgement deadline nears. The Magpies also delisted a pair, but with a caveat.
Forward Reef McInnes, defender Charlie Dean and midfielders Lachie Sullivan and Ned Long have each penned one-year extensions.
The 21-year-old McInnes capped his fourth season at the club, having managed 20 senior games since arriving as a first-round pick in 2020.
Dean, who made his AFL debut in Opening Round against GWS, played eight senior games this year, having joined the Pies as a rookie draftee in 2021.
Sullivan joined the Collingwood fray at the start of the year as a pre-season supplemental signing, with the 27-year-old managing 10 games at AFL level.
Finally, Long was this year elevated to the Pies’ senior list from the VFL program via the mid-season draft, going on to play seven senior games.
Meanwhile, 2023 premiership player Oleg Markov and forward Ash Johnson were delisted ‘with a commitment’ from the Pies to be re-listed through the rookie draft.
“We are pleased to retain Charlie, Ned, Reef and Lachie for another season,” Collingwood list boss Justin Leppitsch said in a statement on Tuesday.
“Charlie and Reef have had their own injury struggles, but their ongoing resilience has enabled them to easily slot back into our system.
“Since joining us, Ned and Lachie have shown great determination to learn our game plan and have seamlessly integrated into the team.
“All four players have added value to both our AFL and VFL programs and we look forward to seeing each of them take their football to another level next year.
“We’ve had to make a difficult decision around Ash and Oleg for 2025, but we are committed to re-listing them as Rookies in the upcoming draft in November.”
The list lodgement period closes on October 31.
OCTOBER 29 – MATURE-AGE TALL AMONG THREE MORE SAINTS CUT
St Kilda have finalised their list ahead of the 2024 Draft, delisting Jack Hayes, Ben Paton and Olli Hotton.
The Saints earlier this week said goodbye to Tim Membrey, before opening up three more spots on their list before next month’s draft.
Paton – who played 71 games since his drafting in 2017 – had the most exposure of the trio, but only managed four games in his final year at the club.
Hayes was selected as a SPP player at the start of 2022, and starred on debut in Round 1 of the same year before rupturing his ACL only a month later.
The 194cm tall was at one point linked in a move to Collingwood, however looks less likely to join them as a delisted free agent – with the Pies seemingly preferring Membrey.
He played eight games across his three years, kicking nine goals and polling two Brownlow votes.
Hotton was drafted with Pick 35 in the 2022 AFL Draft, but did not play a game in his time at Moorabbin.
“Ben, Jack and Olli have all been valued players throughout their time at the club,” Saints General. Manager David Misson said via a club statement on Tuesday afternoon.
“Each have had their individual significant injury setbacks, however, have continually shown to be resilient, optimistic and professional young men throughout these periods.”
OCTOBER 28 – HAWKS DELIST UNCAPPED CATEGORY B
Hawthorn has delisted a Category B rookie without him playing a game, with Josh Saunders not offered a contract for the 2025 AFL season.
The Hawks on Monday night confirmed Saunders had been delisted two years after he was added to the club’s rookie list.
While not playing an AFL game, Saunders managed 33 VFL matches for Box Hill before suffering a shoulder injury in 2024.
“Josh was a much-loved teammate who showed great character and dedication during his time at Hawthorn,” Hawks list boss Mark McKenzie said.
“On behalf of the club, I’d like to thank Josh for his service to Hawthorn and wish him well in his next chapter.
OCTOBER 28 – SAINTS CONFIRM VETERAN’SDELISTING
St Kilda have confirmed the delisting of key forward Tim Membrey after a decade at the club.
The Saints revealed the widely expected decision on social media on Monday afternoon.
“On behalf of everyone here at St Kilda, we would like to sincerely thank Tim for his exceptional service over the past decade,” St Kilda’s EGM of Football David Misson said in a club statement.
“Tim has been the definition of a heart and soul player throughout his time at the club, giving his absolute all on and off the field.
“As we look to expose our young forwards to more senior opportunities moving into 2025, this was a tough but ultimately necessary decision to make.
Per multiple journalists, Membrey is set to join Collingwood as a delisted free agent from November 1 when clubs can begin the recruiting of culled players this off-season.
The 30-year-old has played 179 games, with all but one of them at St Kilda – with Membrey first listed at Sydney for two seasons before his move to Victoria.
Membrey played 19 games for the Saints this year and managed an average of 1.6 goals per game — the same as his career average — to go with 5.2 marks per game.
He has kicked 293 AFL career goals.
OCTOBER 28 – PREMIERSHIP LION SIGNS ON FOR LIFE
Cam Rayner has taken himself off the free agency market just under 12 months in advance, signing on with the reigning premiership Brisbane for life.
The 25-year-old officially put pen to paper over the weekend, and has committed to the Lions until the end of 2031.
“I am stoked to be a part of this great football club for the future and hoping that it means I will be a Lion for life,” Rayner said in a club statement on Monday morning.
“The club and list are in such a strong position, and I feel like if I can continue to add to that I am happy.
“We are back at the top of the mountain where we belong, and I hope that we can stay there for as long as we can.”
“I love this club from top to bottom, whether it’s the staff or players, everyone is so lovely and have made my journey so far as smooth and easy as it can be.”
Rayner was prolific for the Lions across most of this year’s finals series, and recorded 16 disposals and a goal in his side’s 10-goal grand final win over Sydney.
He has played 140 games since his debut in 2018, and was taken with Pick 1 by Brisbane in the 2017 AFL National Draft.
OCTOBER 25 – DOCKERS DELIST FORWARD, COMMIT TO KEEPING RUCK
Fremantle on Friday night announced it had cut forward Tom Emmett.
The 22-year-old Sturt product has played 15 AFL games — 13 of which came this season as a pressuring small forward — across two years in the league.
Emmett kicked seven goals this year and averaged 7.7 disposals per game.
“It is always a tough time of year confirming the final spots on our list and farewelling quality people like Tom. We thank Tom for his contribution on and off the field over the last two years and wish him all the very best,” Fremantle football boss Joe Brierty said in a club statement.
Seven’s Ryan Daniels reports the arrivals of Shai Bolton and Quinton Narkle complicated matters for Emmett, adding the former third-round draft pick will ‘look for another opportunity’ prior to the start of next season.
Elsewhere, uncapped ruckman Max Knobel will also be delisted by the Dockers, however, the club has made ‘a commitment’ to rookie-listing him after the national draft.
“Unfortunately for Max, we need to take three selections into the National Draft. So he will be delisted by the Club with a commitment to select him in the Rookie Draft,” said Brierty in the release.
Odin Jones has been offered a one-year rookie extension.
OCTOBER 23 – ROOS FAREWELL TWO MORE
North Melbourne has announced further list changes, cutting forwards Charlie Lazzaro and Blake Drury on Wednesday.
The 22-year-old Lazzaro played 39 AFL games in Roos colours after arriving as a second-round draft pick in 2020.
The Geelong Falcons product played nine senior games this year.
Drury, 20, managed 10 appearances across two seasons at Arden Street after being picked in the 2022 rookie draft. He played six games at senior level this year.
“We thank Charlie and Blake for the commitment and effort they have shown during their respective time at North Melbourne,” football boss Todd Viney said in a club statement.
“These decisions are never easy to make, and we wish both men well in their future endeavours.”
OCTOBER 23 – DONS CUT FATHER-SON FORWARD
Essendon has delisted uncapped forward Jayden Davey, the club announced on Wednesday.
Davey was a father-son selection in 2022 but couldn’t manage a senior appearance over the course of two seasons at the Hangar — he was sidelined by an ACL injury in 2023.
The 20-year-old Oakleigh Chargers product kicked 17 goals in 18 VFL outings this season.
“Jayden has worked incredibly hard over the past two years to recover from his ACL injury and get himself back to playing football,” Bombers list boss Matt Rosa said in a club statement.
“We thank him for his commitment and contribution to the club. Jayden will always be an Essendon person, and we wish him all the best moving forward.”
OCTOBER 23 – TIGERS MAKE FIRST OFF-SEASON CULLS
Richmond announced its first delistings of the off-season, informing forwards Noah Cumberland and Matthew Coulthard they would not be offered 2025 contracts.
The 23-year-old Cumberland has played 25 senior games since arriving as the No. 43 pick in the 2019 national draft.
The Brisbane Lions Academy graduate hasn’t played more than nine AFL games in a season. He played seven for the Tigers this year.
Both Cumberland and Coulthard had been in limbo throughout the trade period, with Richmond now making calls on list spots as November’s national draft edges closer.
The Tigers nabbed the 23-year-old Coulthard in the 2023 mid-season draft, with the Glenelg product managing six senior matches during his time at Tigerland.
“Both Noah and Matthew moved interstate to join Richmond and put their best foot forward during their time at the club,” Richmond football talent boss Blair Hartley said in a statement on Wednesday.
“We thank Noah for his hard work and efforts across the past five years with us, and Matthew for his contribution across the last 18 months.
“We wish them well for their future endeavours.”
The Tigers also formally delisted Category B rookie Mate Colina but intend to re-list him after November’s drafts.
The 25-year-old is uncapped at AFL level, having been plagued by back issues.
OCTOBER 22 – LIONS CULL YOUNG CUB, COMMIT TO RE-DRAFTING DUO
Brisbane have announced their second round of delistings, with 23-year-old Jaxon Prior not offered a contract by the club for season 2025.
Drafted with Pick 59 in the 2019 AFL Draft, Prior played 39 games for the club between 2021 and 2024; four of which came this season.
“Jaxon showed encouraging development since being drafted and played a role in our success at AFL and VFL level,” Brisbane GM Danny Daly said in a club statement.
“He played strong patches of football this season, however, given the cut-throat nature of professional sport we need to make tough decisions with list spots.
“We would like to thank Jaxon, his partner Bronte and his family for their contribution to the Brisbane Lions for the past five seasons.”
Essendon were reportedly interested in acquiring the defender’s services throughout the year, and now have an opportunity to pick him up as a delisted free agent from November 1.
Prior kicked a career-high three goals against Hawthorn in 2022.
Darragh Joyce and mid-season draftee Darcy Craven have also been delisted, but the Lions have committed to picking them up again in the rookie draft later next month.
OCTOBER 21 – BLUES CONFIRM THREE CHANGES… BUT THERE’S A CATCH FOR TWO
Carlton has confirmed three list changes, with Jack Carroll, Sam Durdin and Matt Carroll delisted by the club.
But Durdin and Matt Carroll’s hopes of remaining with the Blues remain alive, with the duo offered train-on opportunities this summer to earn a spot back on the list for the Pre-Season Supplemental Selection Period (SSP).
Jack Carroll, however, won’t be at the Blues next year after playing 21 games across four seasons — including 15 in 2024. He joined the club after being selected with Pick 41 in the 2020 national draft.
“Jack leaves the football club with lifelong friendships, which is a testament to the positive contribution he made to the group during his four seasons with us and we wish him well for the next opportunity in his career,” Carlton list boss Nick Austin said.
Durdin, a former Kangaroo, was given an AFL lifeline by Carlton via the 2022 mid-season draft, adding two more games to the 22 he managed for North.
Matt Carroll, who was hampered by a groin injury in 2024, didn’t play a senior game after being taken in last year’s rookie draft.
“Sam and Matt had their challenges with injury this year but we have admired their resilience to keep fronting up. While both players have not been offered new playing contracts to this point, they have both been invited to train with the squad and push for a spot on the playing list during the upcoming pre-season,” Austin said.
OCTOBER 21 – CATS CUT CATEGORY B ROOKIE AS DRAFT LOOMS
Geelong have finalised their playing list ahead of next month’s national draft, with Category B rookie Joe Furphy cut after just one season at the club.
Furphy, a 25-year-old with a basketball background, started the year on the sidelines with an ankle injury – but later came back to play 10 games for the club’s VFL side – two of which were during finals.
He recorded a season-best 56 hitouts against North Melbourne’s VFL side in late July.
“We have enjoyed having Joe as part of our football program in 2024, he is a quality person and we wish him all the best in the future,” Geelong GM Andrew Mackie said via a club statement.
Furphy joins Gary Rohan, Brandan Parfitt, Emerson Jeka, Mitch Hardie, Phoenix Foster, Oscar Murdoch and James Willis as Cats players to be delisted this off-season.
OCTOBER 20 – CONTRACTED DEFENDER DEPARTS, POWER AXE FOUR MORE
Port Adelaide have delisted veteran defender Tom Clurey, despite being contracted until the end of 2025 as the club makes a further five list changes.
Drafted in 2012, Clurey played 124 games in a dozen seasons at Alberton – remarkably never kicking either a goal or behind given his status as a defender.
The 30-year-old played 17 games at SANFL level this season, and played only one match at AFL level in his last two years at the club.
AFL Media’s Callum Twomey reported in August that West Coast could potentially target Clurey, and can now do so in the pre-season draft if they wish to acquire his defensive nous.
“Tom came to Port Adelaide as part of my first Draft as coach,” coach Ken Hinkley said via a club statement.
“We identified him as a player who could provide flexibility for us in the back half and he did that more across his 124-game career.
“There was never much fuss with Tom, and he didn’t seek the limelight. He just got on with his job and rarely let us down, often matching up on much bigger sized forwards.”
Alongside Clurey, all of Quinton Narkle, Francis Evans, Tom Scully and Kyle Marshall were delisted on Monday afternoon.
Narkle played 16 games as a Power player in his two seasons; nine of which were as the sub in a small forward role.
Between his stint at Alberton and Geelong, the 26-year-old has played 57 games.
The West Australian’s Craig O’Donoghue has reported that Fremantle are keen on adding him to their list as a delisted free agent.
Evans, like Narkle, also came to the Power as a former Cat – playing 27 games at the club after seven at Geelong.
He played 17 AFL games in 2024, six of which were as sub.
“Quinton and Frankie have contributed really positively to our club, at both AFL and SANFL level,” Power list boss Jason Cripps said in the same club statement.
“They provided good depth for us when we needed it, and we are grateful for the time they spent at Port Adelaide.”
Neither Scully or Marshall represented the club at AFL level, and were both drafted by Port in 2022.
OCTOBER 20 – FORMER CRICKETER, TWO-CLUB TALL CALLS TIME
Western Bulldogs key defender Alex Keath has retired from the AFL at age 32.
After making the move to Australian rules from domestic cricket as a youngster, Keath joined the Adelaide Crows as a Category B rookie in 2016, before playing 30 games at the club across three seasons.
The 198cm defender then moved back to Victoria at the end of the 2019 season, where he played a further 79 matches.
“I want to express my sincere gratitude to the Western Bulldogs Football Club,” Keath said via a Bulldogs statement.
“The players, coaches, support staff and volunteers have been a pleasure to work with.
“To our fans – it’s been a privilege to represent the Bulldogs faithful over the journey. The memories will last a lifetime, thank you.”
“He is the epitome of hard work and determination, a reliable defender who gave his all each time he ran onto the field. He’s also a much-loved and highly respected individual, not just by his teammates but also by staff across all sections of our Club,” club list manager Sam Power added.
Keath played 23 games in the Bulldogs’ 2021 season, where they made the grand final before losing to Melbourne in Perth.
OCTOBER 16 — INDICATIVE DRAFT ORDER AFTER TRADE PERIOD
Six clubs won’t even be involved in night one of the AFL Draft, with a few sides to dominate the opening round after the trade period reshaped the 2024 national draft order.
Richmond holds a staggering eight picks inside the top 24 after completing several deals on deadline day.
Between picks five and 11, just three clubs are currently slated to pick up players – Melbourne (5 and 9), St Kilda (7 and 8) and the Tigers (6, 10 and 11).
But in contrast none of Brisbane, Collingwood, Essendon, Geelong, Gold Coast or Hawthorn have a pick inside the top 27 after trading picks for players, later selections or future choices.
