Following the release of Luther: The Fallen Sun in March 2023, it was expected that Netflix would release more films starring Idris Elba’s titular detective. The ending of the movie was also a huge indication about the future of the character, giving Luther an entirely new job and purpose. The BBC series that had preceded the film had completely altered the trajectory of Luther’s character, and The Fallen Sun set the stage for a new mystery and conflict on a much bigger scale than what had come before. Now, the newest film that is currently in pre-production has added new cast members.
Per an exclusive report from Deadline, Stephen Dillane (The Outrun), Anya Chalotra (The Witcher), Kyle Soller (Andor), Ian Hart (The Mosquito Coast), and Niamh Algar (Raised by Wolves) have all signed on to join Elba in the upcoming Luther movie from Netflix. In a plot description released late last year, the story of the new film is described as being “thrust into motion when a new wave of brutal, seemingly random murders hits London and DCI John Luther (Elba) is secretly called back into service. But how can he save London when everyone on all sides seems to want him dead?”
Other than that brief description, plot details are being kept under wraps for the film, which has yet to receive a subtitle. Created by Neil Cross, Luther first starred in a series that aired from 2010 to 2019, before making the transition into feature films. It’s not too dissimilar to what happened to Peaky Blinders, the series starring Cillian Murphy which is also set to receive a movie from Netflix this year to help conclude the story that started in the series. Alongside Elba and these new cast members is returning characters Superintendent Schenk (Dermot Crowley) and Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson).
The Upcoming ‘Luther’ Film Will Feature a Long Awaited Reunion
Empire magazine reports that the Luther film is set to begin shooting this month, and will continue the loose plot threads that were teased at the end of that first film. Most important among those is Ruth Wilson’s return as Alice Morgan, a character whom Luther has had an unconventional relationship with since the first season of the series all the way back in 2010. The Femme Fatale has been both an enemy and ally of Elba’s detective, and it’s not entirely sure what side she’ll be on in the upcoming movie.
There is currently no release date set for this second Luther movie, though since shooting is set to begin soon, it could release as early as the end of this year, but will more than likely drop sometime in 2027. Elba just recently starred in the action comedy film Hijack, while Wilson was in the Apple TV adaptation of Slow Horses author Mick Herron’s Down Cemetery Road. The reunion between the two stars has been a long time coming, and will undoubtedly be a highlight of this next Luther film, especially since the first movie had the character much more isolated in a darker, more subversive story.
