Adam Sandler Reveals What Would Have Happened If He Hadn't Become a Comedian

When receiving a recent award, comedy legend Adam Sandler has made us all imagine what would have happened if he hadn’t decided to pursue a career as an actor. Judging from his words, Sandler is quite sure that he would have had to work for his father instead – an outcome that he described in a very hilarious acceptance speech: “I’d probably know how to charge my own phone.”

“I can’t thank you all enough for letting me have this career that I’ve been lucky enough to have,” Sandler said after receiving the Chairman’s Award at the Palm Springs International Film Awards. The actor is currently promoting his latest film, Jay Kelly, the Netflix comedy drama co-starring George Clooney and Laura Dern. After stating that it was an honor to receive the award from Dern, Sandler then delivered the hilarious speech in which he described his father’s first reaction to him becoming a comedy actor, and what would have happened if that hadn’t worked:

“Like every actor, when I decided to become an actor, my parents were disgruntled. When I graduated college, I got a Bachelor of Fine Arts for writing, and my father told me he was very proud of me and I should try it out for one year. He said, ‘Go for your dream, see if you can get something going. If it doesn’t work out after one year, you’ll come work for me.’ My dad was an electrical contractor. I didn’t know very much about electricity or contracting.”

Sandler describes how different vacation time would have been if he had followed his father’s line of work, and then smoothly finds a way to make a joke out of it: “I probably would have not just had a vacation in Hawaii. If I wanted to go swimming, I would have just gone in the pond up the street next to the nuclear power plant. But it’s not all bad news, because then my penis would glow in the dark… I’d definitely be wearing the same clothes I always wear. And I probably wouldn’t have a Cadillac right now, or if I did, it would be my father’s.”

Thank you guys for letting me make all these movies over the years. I’m going to try to make more.

Although he’s mostly known for his work in the comedy field, Sandler has always shown he has the talent for drama. Early performances in films like Punch-Drunk Love, and recent ones like Uncut Gems have put him in the spotlight as one of the most underappreciated actors of his generation, and definitely one that can easily transition between comedy and drama.

In his latest film, Sandler once again shows that he isn’t just a comedy icon, but also a versatile actor who transforms for every role he pursues. When talking about the film, and director Noah Baumbach, Sandler says:

“I didn’t want to let him down. I didn’t want to let down any of my castmates. I didn’t want to let down my family. I didn’t want to let myself down. So I always try my best.”
