The New York Sirens travelled to Massachusetts on March 5, where they faced the Boston Fleet for their sixth and final matchup of the 2024-25 Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) season. In the first five matchups, Boston had been victorious in every game. They continued their streak with a 5-2 victory tonight, sweeping the Sirens in the six-game series.

Game Recap

Seven minutes into the first period, the Sirens lit the lamp first. Elizabeth Giguere picked up the puck off the faceoff. She skated around the back of the net and sent a backhand shot past Aerin Frankel.

Seven minutes later, the Fleet were able to tie the game. Hilary Knight was near the front of the net with Alina Muller. Knight had the puck and passed to Muller to her left. She tipped the puck into the net to put the Fleet on the board. The first period came to an end with a 1-1 tied score.

31 seconds into the second period, Paetyn Levis took a seat for cross-checking. A minute later, the Fleet capitalized on their extra woman opportunity. Susanna Tapani had possession of the puck near the faceoff dot. She passed up to Shay Maloney, who was next to the goal. She saw Knight in front of the net, and passed to her. She tipped the puck into the net to put the Fleet on top of the scoreboard.

At the 12-minute mark, the home team scored once more. Muller had the puck in the center of the ice and sent it down towards the Fleet’s offensive zone. Knight was able to pick it up and skate to the net on a breakaway. No one on the Sirens could catch her, and she shot the puck into the back of Kayle Osborne’s net.

At 13:50, Hannah Brandt went to the box for high-sticking. Less than a minute later, the Sirens were able to score on the power play. The play began with Ella Shelton at the blue line, passing the puck to Sarah Fillier. She passed across the ice to Jessie Eldridge. She surveyed her surroundings and saw Abby Roque next to the net. Similar to the play Boston made at the beginning of the period, Roque passed down to Fillier. Once the puck hit her stick, she let it fly, where it found the back of the net. The second period ended with New York trailing by one.

The third began with a lot of back and forth. At 14:54, the Fleet were able to score once more. Sophie Shirley passed the puck along the boards where it found Jill Saulnier. She skated it up to the net and sent a pass to Tapani on her left. Once she gained control of the puck, she took a shot to score the fourth of the night for the Fleet.

The Sirens pulled Osborne in an attempt to get back on the board. However, the Fleet got the best of them. With eight seconds left on the clock, Knight sent the puck down the ice and into the empty net. Not only did she earn her first career hat trick, but she also made sure the Fleet came away with a 5-2 victory.

Next Up

The Fleet will be back at it at home on Saturday, March 8, when they host the Montreal Victoire. The Sirens will head home and get ready to also host the Victoire on Wednesday, March 12.
