Invincible has just returned for Season 3, with the first three episodes now streaming on Prime Video. Season 3 sees Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) training and preparing for the incoming Viltrumite invasion, while also becoming a mentor to his new half-brother, Oliver. While the core Invincible series, based on the comics by Robert Kirkman, is predominantly Mark’s story, some of the show’s cast and fans are hoping the secondary characters will get spinoffs. But when it comes to a Rex Splode spinoff, Kirkman isn’t so sure.
During an interview with Collider for the Invincible Season 3 premiere, Jason Mantzoukas, who voices Rex Splode in the series, says he wants Rex to have his own explosive spinoff. “Absolutely,” Mantzoukas said when pitched the idea by the journalist. “We gotta tell Robert Kirkman that we need a Rex Splode spin-off.” In Hollywood, it’s not what you know, but who you know, and, like Commissioner Gordon calling Batman, Jason Mantzoukas went and fetched Robert Kirkman at the premiere to ask him about the spinoff. Unfortunately, Kirkman wasn’t sold on the idea. “Never gonna happen,” was his blunt response.
The pair shared a hilarious back and forth about a Rex Splode spinoff series. “How dare you?” Mantzoukas jokingly replied. That said, it seems Robert Kirkman isn’t completely against a Rex Splode spinoff; he just doesn’t want Mantzoukas starring in it. “Although, maybe if he’s young enough that Jason doesn’t do the voice.” Surprisingly, Jason Mantzoukas didn’t mind that idea, turning to the camera and saying, “Wait a minute, what? [Laughs] That’s an exclusive right there.”
Could More ‘Invincible’ Spinoffs Happen?
So far, Invincible fans have only been treated to one spinoff from the core show. While many modern series give popular supporting characters their own multi-season spinoff shows or movies, Invincible‘s approach is a little more constrained. In 2023, Prime Video revealed Invincible: Atom Eve, a one-off special episode following the titular hero, voiced by Gillian Jacobs. Atom Eve was directed by Haylee Herrick and co-written by Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley, and took fans back in time to Eve’s first days as a hero. The spinoff was tremendously popular among the fan base, and we’re all eagerly awaiting more special episodes.

‘Invincible creator Robert Kirkman talks about pushing the superhero genre into new directions.
Following the release of the episode in 2023, Robert Kirkman teased that there could be more specials on the way. “It’s a nice venue to be able to focus on a character,” he began. “So it’s possible that we may do something else in the future.” However, there’s just one major thing standing in the way, as Kirkman continued:
“But, you know, we also have to get these massive eight-episode seasons out in a reasonable amount of time or everyone will revolt and eventually quit the show.”
New episodes of Invincible will be released weekly. Season 3 is already a major hit with critics, holding a Rotten Tomatoes score of 99%. Fans will also be delighted to hear that the new season will come without the pesky mid-season break that killed the momentum of Season 2.
