The term “reshoots” has become synonymous with people assuming the worst about films, particularly comic book movies. Both Marvel and DC studios fans have become familiar with the term, with additional filming happening for a number of significant projects in the past. One of the most infamous was Joss Whedon’s reshoots for 2017’s Justice League, and the most recent being the number of reshoots and delays to 2025’s Captain America: Brave New World. Now, with reports of additional photography being done for James Gunn’s Superman surfacing, there is almost immediate concern. However, Gunn himself quells any worries with a statement on social media.
When a discussion of reshoots on Superman came about on social media, Gunn took to Threads to explain precisely what shooting would be done for the film when asked by a fan. The director would say that the reports were “sort of” true and that it would not be “a few days” of reshoots. Instead, Gunn would specify that the Superman production team was “doing a day and a half of pickup shots. No scenes. No reshoots. Just a handful of individual shots to enhance the film.”
Given the way that reports of additional filming are treated on the social media landscape, it’s hard to blame Gunn for his quick response to make it clear that there wouldn’t be anything substantial. Moreover, Gunn has a history of not only being very transparent about his filmmaking process, but also his efficiency during production. From detailing his storyboards to having a strict shooting schedule, the director wastes no time bringing his visions to life.
Gunn’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ & ‘Superman’ Shoots Were Incredibly Efficient
In a thread posted earlier this year, Gunn let a fan know on threads that he’s barely ever experienced the difficulty of additional filming or reshoots, stating that he’s “done a total of one day of reshoots on [his] past two films combined.” Given the massive scale and emotional story of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and the fact that The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special was also filmed concurrently, it’s extremely impressive that Gunn managed to deliver such an entertaining and well-made film.

What do you hope to see in the Superman trailer?
The trailer for James Gunn’ Superman movie is supposedly coming sometime this month. On top of that, actor James Grillo has stated in an interview with Movieweb that he almost broke down in tears because the editing reminded him of Christopher Reeves’ take on the iconic DC superhero. On the other hand, there have been reports that the same trailer has gone back and forth between Warner Brother execs and Gunn’s team due to constant revisions. Emotions and WB hesitancy aside, what do YOU expect to see from this upcoming trailer? Let me know in the comments below!
Usually, additional days of filming are added to a film following negative or middling test screenings of a movie, which is the case for Captain America: Brave New World (if reports are to be believed). Had Gunn not dismissed the rumors of extensive additional shooting, assumptions might have been made about the quality of the film and its story. However, Gunn seems confident in the film, with a trailer for the movie expected soon.
Preconceived notions of additional filming can lead to a stigma surrounding any given film, even though it is not necessarily a bad thing. Thankfully, Gunn’s position as co-chairman of DC Studios has led to a philosophy of always having a complete script before moving forward with production. With a creative process like this, additional filming and the negative press that comes with it may be a thing of the past for DC films, something the studio desperately needs.
