(part 2) Me and my friends went to Disneyland last month – now my boyfriend isn’t acting like himself

I couldn’t sleep this night. Every time I closed my eyes, I just saw that mirror inside Phantom Manor – the empty doom buggy behind us. Or maybe not empty.

I followed the advice from the comment section and went to Chloe’s apartment this morning.

She looked worried when she opened the door.

‘Jesus, Sarah… you look awful.’

‘I haven’t slept.’

‘You can tell.’

She gave me a quick hug and pulled me inside. We talked for a bit, just like normal – work, silly gossip, stupid things we’d found online. I knew she was holding off on the important stuff.

When we sat down across from each other, she sighed.

‘So,’ she said carefully, ‘what’s up with you and Leo?’

My stomach dropped.

‘I think something is wrong with him.’

Chloe frowned slightly.

‘Wrong with him?’

‘He’s been acting weird since Disneyland. He’s forgetting things, or saying things differently. Sometimes he doesn’t even seem like himself.’

She was quiet for a minute.

Then she looked a little uncomfortable.

‘Sarah…’ she said slowly, ‘I’m going to be honest with you.’

A cold feeling spread through my chest.

‘What?’

‘I think Leo seems pretty normal to me.’

I stared at her.

‘And you…’ she hesitated, ‘you’ve seemed kind of strange lately.’

My throat tightened.

‘What do you mean?’

‘I don’t know,’ she shrugged nervously. ‘You space out a lot lately, and you repeat yourself, and you sounded like you were terrified on the phone yesterday.’

‘Because I am.’

‘I know,’ she said softly. ‘I just think you might be freaking yourself out.’

I immediately shook my head.

‘No. Chloe, I know what I saw. Leo did not get on Phantom Manor.’

‘Yeah…’ she said, and then paused.

And then froze.

Not dramatically, just for a second. Like her words didn’t quite keep up with her thoughts.

Her eyes went slightly distant, then she blinked and laughed nervously.

‘No, sorry,’ she said quickly. ‘You were the one that didn’t go on the ride.’

The air in the apartment suddenly felt colder.

Because for half a second… she almost agreed with me.

I left not long after that.

Driving home, my hands wouldn’t stop shaking. I kept replaying that moment in my head – the pause, the hesitation, like she had something else she wanted to say.

I got back home just before Leo came back from work.

I was sitting on the couch with my laptop open, pretending to browse something so I wouldn’t look suspicious, when I heard his car pull into the driveway.

A minute later, the front door opened.

Leo walked in smiling like nothing was out of the ordinary.

He leaned down and kissed my forehead.

‘Hello, honey lovebug.’

He calls me that every day. For a minute, I almost relaxed.

Normal. Safe.

I convinced myself I was losing my mind.

Then I saw it.

As he walked past me into the living room, he left his phone on the kitchen island.

Unlocked.

The screen showed security footage, at first I thought it was just some random camera feed, but then I recognized it.

Chloe’s apartment.

From the angle of something hidden inside the room.

Inside the frame, Chloe sat on her couch alone. She looked exhausted and uneasy, and every few seconds glanced nervously toward something off-screen, like she knew she was being watched.
