Hardcore TV western fanatics hankering for a brief show to blow through quickly until Y: Marshals premieres in March 2026 are in luck. We’ve rounded up a collection of short but powerful TV series that reflect the harsh and unforgiving nature of frontier living, culling from some of the best modern streaming and traditional network examples of the last 35 years.
More ideal yet, the most compelling TV westerns come from such authorial genre voices as Larry McMurtry and acclaimed cinematic storytellers like Baz Luhrmann and Scott Frank. With no more than seven episodes to breeze through in a weekend, Yellowstone fans who cannot wait for the latest spin-off ought to give these outstanding Western miniseries a day in court.
Faraway Downs (2023)
Available To Stream on Hulu
Although most avid Western enthusiasts tend to associate the genre with the American frontier and the quest for westward expansion, Baz Luhrmann’s vastly underrated miniseries Faraway Downs will give them a new international perspective. A serialized continuation of Luhrmann’s 2008 misfire, Australia, Faraway Downs ties up several loose ends and makes for a much more gratifying experience.
Similar to The Hateful Eight’s 4-part Netflix continuation, Faraway Downs is a six-episode extension that follows Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman), an English noble who inherits a one-million-acre cattle ranch in Faraway Downs, Australia. When her husband is killed, Sarah teams up with Drover (Hugh Jackman), a rugged cattle herder, to fend off the greedy land baron, King Carney (Bryan Brown).
Apart from the sweeping spectacle of Australia’s stunning landscapes and the electric chemistry between Kidman and Jackman, Faraway Downs is at its best when exploring the country’s cruel “Stolen Generations” racial policy, in which countless indigenous Aboriginal children were forcibly taken from their families between 1905 and 1970. The policy is emphasized through Nullah (Brandon Walters), a biracial native son who is caught in the middle of the archaic law and is cared for by Sarah.
Hatfields & McCoys (2012)
Available To Purchase on Amazon Prime Video & AppleTV
Based on one of the most heated blood rivalries in American history, Hatfields & McCoys ranks among The History Channel’s most crowning achievements. The epic three-part miniseries stars Kevin Costner as William Anderson “Devil Anse” Hatfield, the protective patriarch of the West Virginia family who fought tooth and nail to control his plot of land.
On the other side of the fight, the late great Bill Paxton portrays Randolph McCoy, a dutiful father who lost five children in the 30-year blood feud with the Hatfields from 1863 to 1891. With a Shakespearean family tragedy arising from the forbidden love affair between Johnse Hatfield (Matt Barr) and Roseanna McCoy (Lindsay Pulsipher), Hatfields & McCoys tills similar territory as Yellowstone’s spin-off 1883.
Although made as appointment viewing before the streaming age, Hatfields & McCoys is brief enough to blast through in a few days. Not only did the superb miniseries break the History Channel’s viewership record at the time, but it also earned Costner a Golden Globe and a Primetime Emmy Award for his remarkable performance.
The Good Lord Bird (2020)
Available To Purchase on Amazon Prime Video and AppleTV
Ethan Hawke co-created and stars in the must-see American Civil War western miniseries, The Good Lord Bird, which ran on Showtime for seven episodes in 2020. Based on James McBride’s novel of the same name, the series follows real-life abolitionist John Brown (Hawke), who leads a ragtag crew against the injustices of slavery during the bloody battle on the Kansas-Missouri border during the 1860s.
Much like Faraway Downs, The Good Lord Bird is told through the perspective of a young child caught in the middle of a war. In this case, the fictional slave boy, Henry “Onion” Shackleford (Joshua Caleb Johnson), recounts his harrowing encounters in the war as a member of Brown’s abolitionist group. An under-told story hardly addressed in American classrooms, the edutainment level and award-winning source novel, coupled with the outstanding performances, is alone worth checking out.
In addition to telling an important true story and Hawke’s commanding Golden Globe-nominated turn, The Good Lord Bird features outstanding performances by Daveed Diggs as Frederick Douglass, Wyatt Russell as J.E.B. Stuart, and Hawke’s Boyhood co-star Ellar Coltrane as John Brown’s son, Salmon.
American Primeval (2025)
Available To Stream on Netflix
With all six episodes directed with a singular focus by Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights), American Primeval is the best Netflix western series of 2025. With every episode written by Mark L. Smith (Twisters, Vacancy), the gritty, ultra-violent western takes place in 1857 Utah, where the confluence of Christianity and European settlers clashes with the indigenous population.
Set against the backdrop of the Mountain Meadows Massacre, the story follows the white tracker Isaac Reed, AKA Spotted Hawk, who was raised by the Shoshone tribe. Traumatized by the loss of his wife and child, Reed forms a tender bond with Sara Holloway (Betty Gilpin), an outlaw wanted for murdering her corrupt husband. Meanwhile, the formation of the Church of Latter-day Saints leads to an irreconcilable culture war with the Utah natives that underscores the importance of the separation of church and state.
Too often with streaming shows, the dramatic narrative loses focus amid multiple writers and directors working on a single season. American Primeval sidesteps that issue by adhering to the unwavering vision of Smith’s nuanced writing and Berg’s swift direction. Apart from the riveting story, American Primeval earned Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Best Costumes and Best Cinematography.
Godless (2017)
Available To Stream on Netflix
Before challenging Netflix viewership records with The Queen’s Gambit, Scott Frank (Out of Sight, Get Shorty) delivered the woefully overlooked western miniseries Godless in 2017. Featuring a career-best performance by Jeff Daniels (who worked with Frank in the equally underrated The Lookout), Godless is set in La Belle, New Mexico, in 1884. The story tracks Roy Goode (Jack O’Connell), an outlaw on the run from Frank Griffin (Daniels), the ruthless leader of a gang of thieves who will stop at nothing to get his hidden loot back.
As Roy seeks refuge in La Belle, he befriends Alice Fletcher (Michelle Dockery) in a town populated by women after a mining mishap killed most of the men. A refreshing feminist take on the male-dominated Western genre, Godless is a divine, must-see tale of female empowerment that both Vanity Fair and The Washington Post named among their Top 10 Best Shows of the year.
Not only did Daniels win a Primetime Emmy for his terrifying performance, but so too did Meritt Weaver for her unforgettable role as Mary Agnes McNue. Mary is the shrewd, enterprising sister of town sheriff Bill McNue (Scoot McNairy), the widow of La Belle’s former mayor, who helps shape the new society in La Belle following the mining accident.
Lonesome Dove (1989)
Available To Stream on Prime Video
The granddaddy of the all-time great Western miniseries to binge quickly, Lonesome Dove will always reign supreme. Based on Larry McMurtry’s epic Western novel, the four-part miniseries was viewed by roughly 26 million households well before the modern-day streaming age. With movie-caliber performances by Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones, the story follows Gus (Duvall) and Call (Jones), two ex-Texas Rangers who operate a small horse table along the Rio Grande in the late 1870s.
Thanks to the stellar performances, splendid source material, and $20 million resources that went into making a risky miniseries in 1989, Lonesome Dove continues to tower over its predecessors, contemporaries, and countless imitators. With each of the four chapters playing like a standalone 90-minute movie, the sheer scope and breadth of Gus and Call’s long-term bond is second to none.
As such, it’s no surprise that Lonesome Dove scored a whopping 19 Primetime Emmy nods, winning seven, including one for Best Miniseries and Best Actor in a Miniseries (Duvall). Not only does Lonesome Dove stand the test of time, but without its smashing success, it can be argued that none of the other Western miniseries listed would even exist.
